Zelgwich made bis escape. Farren, another Greek and Zelgwich had been engaged m a card game In the Vienna saloon. After baring played for some time, Zelgwich Jumped to his feet and shouted that Farrell bad cheated. Loud words followed, and Zelgwich flourishea knife In FarreH face. Far-reU Far-reU and the third man left the saloon. Farrell .going out the rear door, when Zelgwich replaced the knife in his pocket, muttering that he would use It later. Zelgwich then went out the rear door. i Zelgwich and Farrell met in a dark passageway between two buildings at the rear of the saloon, and their quarrel was renewed. The sound of their voices was beard by those who were still In the saloon. Then there was a moment's silence, si-lence, and the door was pushed open by Farrell. who staggered into the saloon, with a stream of blood pouring from a knife wound In bis chest. He fell to the floor and as those who saw him rushed to his aid, is said to have gasped that Zelgwich bad stabbed him. He died ten minutes later. Deputy Marshal Graham and Doctor Bairn and Farraher .went to the saloon, but they could do nothing for Farrell. Graham and Marshal Mauss made a thorough search for the fugitive, but could not find him. Zelgwich bad been hi Murray about six months. Farrell was a butcher, and had been In Murray for Several years. One of the Austrlans who saw the quarrel is said to have made the statement state-ment that Zelgwich had killed another man several years ago. |
