Show I D. LEWIS IS JUDGE i 1 Popular Salt Lake Attorney Attor-ney Appointed to Fourth District Bc&cb. Attorney Thomas D. Lewis was appointed ap-pointed by Gov. Wells yesterday to fill the fourth place on the Third District bench, which was created by the re- cent Legislature. Mr. Lewis was highly recommended for the honorable position by the Bar association and many of the prominent lawyers of Salt Lake City. Mr. Lewis's friends say he is a staunch Republican and they were confident con-fident of his being appointed by the Governor from the start. The new Judge will at once be' installed in-stalled to assist the other Judges of the Third District court. Judge Lewis was born in Salt Lake City .September 15, 1863, and received his early education in the local schools. After graduating from the common grades he attended the University of Utah, where he received the degree of B. A. In 1886. He then entered the University of Michigan, taking a one year's course in 'the literary department depart-ment and three years in the law school. From Ann Arbor he came back to Utah, where he began the practice of law in 1891. He was a member of the first State Legislature in 1896, sitting In the lower house. From J.897 until 1901, he was deputy collector of internal revenue under President McKlnley. During the campaign of 1901 he was the choice of the bar of Salt Lake for municipal Judge, and ran on an independent inde-pendent ticket, but was defeated by the regular Republican nominee. |
