The business of suppressing the lnsur- rectlon Is dally becoming more methodical method-ical and developing more ability upon the part of those engaged in it. The question ques-tion of the possibility of complications arising owing to the enlistment of for eigners was. It is claimed, settled by foreign recruits signing an agreement which provides that they enlist only for the purpose of suppressing the insurrec tion and do noi enter the regular Cuban service as soldiers. The victory of the Government forces at Campo Florida, twenty miles east of Havana, yesterday, resulting in the loss of twenty men killed for the insurgents, has not caused the rejoicing here which might have been expected, as the men slain have relatives and friends here. The authorities of several of the Cuban cities have caused the erection of earthworks earth-works as a protection against Insurgent attacks. The Governor of Santiago has received reports of a rising at Songo, twenty miles from Santiago. He dispatched a force of mounted rural guards shortly before midnight yesterday to Songo on a special train. ' |
