Show HAS SECRET TO TELL AT DEATH . - CaretaKer of the Grave of Thomas Paine for Fifty Years Doesn't Want to Be Alone at End. NEW YORK, Dec. 31.- Tering that he ould die alone, Capt. Gvorge W. Lloyd, for fifty year caretaker' of Thomas Paine' monument in New Ro-chelle, Ro-chelle, took up his midence at the county house at East View Sunday. He is not a pauper and will pay bis board to the county of Westchester. His wife died two years ago and, shortly afterward his sitter, who lived with him. became deranged and was committed, to an institution. Fearing death might overtake him any day, ne wanted some one with him at the end, as he his something important im-portant to reveal before he expires. Intimate In-timate friends have tried to extract his secret, but have failed. For more than half a century Capt. Lloyd guarded the tomb of Paine. There waa no pay attached to the position, vet he visited the grave of the free thinker regularly during all these years to see that it was not desecrated by religious fanaMcs. On .Tulv 4 last he formallv turned over the keys to Mayor (.'lark and retired, the municipality .of New Rochelle having agreed to assume the expense. In the years which Copt. Lloyd spent in charge of the monument he became widelv acquainted with the "free thinking" element throughout the country, and sent manv of them inkstands ink-stands and souvenirs which he carved from the wood of trees which grew near Paine 's grave. |
