Show SUNDAY CLOSING TO BE ENFORCED BY BUTCHERS AND GROCERS' SOCIETY Storekeepers who persist in opening up on Sunday hereafter are subject to trouble. v . This was so decided at a meeting of the Retail Butchers and Grocers' association asso-ciation whichwas1 held in the association associa-tion rooms last Tuesday night. Great interest was shown by all present pres-ent regarding the matter, an4 after all sides of the question were discussed it was decnKd to take the matter up and put a stop to the practice. Not only is it an injustice to those who keep closed but it is not regarded as right and necessary ne-cessary by the members of the sssoeia-tion. sssoeia-tion. A committee of seven was appointed ap-pointed to look into the matter and bring the issue to a peaceful close if possible. The members of the committee were instructed to wait on those remaining open, whose names were reported at the last meeting, and give them-a certain time in which to report on their action, whether they will close or remain open. This committee is following section 4234, Bevised Statutes of Utah, 1893, which is as follows: "Every person who keeps open on Sunday any store, workshop, bar, saloon, banking-house, or other place of business for the purpose pur-pose of transacting business therein, is punishable by a fine not less than $5 nor more than $100." This lsw until the present time has been given little attention, as all have closed according to the usual time, which is from 8 or 7 a. m. to 7:30 p. m7 except on Saturday, when the closing time ia 10:30 p. m. All stores are expected to be closed on legal le-gal holidays and special appointed days decided upon by the governing board of the Butchers and Grocers' association. associa-tion. The committee wilj ask the storekeepers store-keepers to close on Sunday, and those who fail will be taken to account. The attorneys for the association are drawing draw-ing up a petition to hand to the City Council that the Sunday law be hereafter here-after stringently enforced. It is probable prob-able that those who persist in remaining remain-ing open will not be allowed to run a store at all. this right bqing taken away from them. At any rate, a heavy fine will be imposed. |
