Show LONDON MAKES MONEY ON ITS CAR SYSTEM LONDON. Aug. . Municipal ownership owner-ship of street railways is a success la London, according to the current report of London's municipal-owned surface lines, as issued today by the London County Council. This report forms a basis for comparison compar-ison with similar existing and projected experiments in municipal ownership of local street transportation In America. The surface car lines Included In the system operated or leased by the London Lon-don County Council have a total of 125 miles and during the year just ended returned re-turned a net surplus of $156,245, representing repre-senting a profit of a little over 1 per cent on the investment. The population of London was carried more than thirty-six times on the cars 'owned by the County Council. Twenty-one new car lines are recommended at a cost of $3,500,000. The detailed figures show . that on the South London lines, which form the main pert of the system, from carrying 183,500.000 passengers over more than 15.500,000 car miles, the receipts ex-ceeded ex-ceeded the expenses by $1,102,270. This profit, though respectable, shrinks, however,' how-ever,' to only $11,595, when charges for debt and other Incidents are deducted. " |
