Show JUDGE li'CARTY SHOWS UP METHODS Of SHOOT MACHINE IN POLITICS Associate Justice of the Supreme Court William M. McCarty Sunday gave out to the publio correspondence that had passed between him and United States Senator Oeorge Sutherland during the past winter and spring, In which he speaks in no uncertain terms ot the domineering dom-ineering and high-handed methods of the Smoot machine. The Washington delegation delega-tion Is charged by Justice McCarty with violating the Federal statute, an order of President Roosevelt and the platform ot the Republican party In attempting to remove Col. Hobbs from the local Land office. It Is charged that the Smoot machine makes appointments for the purpose of enabling Senator Smoot to further his personal ambitions, and not for the good of -the party. The letters state that Smoot hae been endeavoring to fill Federal Fed-eral offices in Utah with his henchmen, regardless of qualifications. Correspondence was 'produced showing that Justice McCarty has been a determined deter-mined opponent of the machine and the abuses it has heaped upon the people. For several days the Smootlte organ has abused Justice McCarty and Bought to stem the tide of public Indignation by making an attack by insinuation and in-uendo. in-uendo. The attacks were made in connection con-nection with the Ogden Councllmanlc cases, wherein machine henchmen were found guilty of unlawfully voting money to themselves as Councllmen. The organ intimated that Justice McCarty and his associate, Chief Justice O. W. Bartch, had decided against the machine Council-men Council-men because of Improper influences. The exposure of the attempt of Attorney-General Breedan and United States Marshal William Spry to Influence the decision of the Ogden Council case a caused the Smoot organ to make Insinuations Insinua-tions touching Justice Mccarty's standing. stand-ing. To protect and stand by these two men who are alleged to have used Improper Im-proper methods in regard to the Councll-manlo Councll-manlo cases and endeavor, "as party men," to affect the ruling of Judge Howell How-ell of Ogden In the cases, the paper sought to belittle the standing of Justice McCarty. According to the correspondence it is shown that Justice McCarty broke with the machine long before the Ogden cases, and it was due to his objeotlons to the machine prostituting Federal patronage for selfish political ends. The work of the Smoot organ In now attacking Justice MoCarty, a member of the same party. Is merely a pretext at this time, and the real object Is to punish him, as Is stated In one of the letters, for being "disappointing" and "unfair," and ruffling the feathers in the Republican coop. Judge McCarty declares that he Is still a Republican, and declines to be read out of the Republican party at the will of the Provo apostle. He bitterly denounces the methods of the Smoot machine to dictate dic-tate the affairs of Utah politics, and asserts as-serts It is an effort to say who are and who are not Republicans, and says there is a plot to corrupt and debase the Judiciary Ju-diciary of Utah. The methods by which the machine does business are exposed by the correspondence, corre-spondence, and show how Republicans are made or not made party men. Just as the machine pleases to see them. The small directorate ot "alleged politicians" poli-ticians" that does the work ot the machine ma-chine is represented as nudging and whispering the will ot the church, or pretending to do so. In his letters to Senator Sutherland, he calls upon that official to break away from the Smoot dictatorship. Sutherland's Suther-land's letters, which are peevish in tone, are printed along with those of Judge McCarty. The Smoot organ today continues its attack on Judge McCarty, accusing him of "pernicious activity" in politics and voicing the programme of the Smoot machine to attempt the control ot the judiciary ot the State. |
