Show Former Apostles John W. Taylor and M. P. Cowley were not the only members mem-bers of the' general church autnoritlea whose names were ' not presented for confirmation last Sunday. There' was another name, that of a man whoeld, or 'was at least supposed to hold, at least two Important church' positions. . Few, if any,' of the vast congregation noticed the omission of the name, not because he is not well enough known in the "church, but the deposing of two apostles and .the' naming of their successors suc-cessors overshadowed every other thought In their minds. ' - , Now, however, they are asking, Was the- name of Joseph M. Tanner, as a member of , the general board of education educa-tion of the church school system, presented? pre-sented? . . '-It 'was; not. Mr. Tanner has been a member of the board for. a number of years, but his name was not presented as a member Sunday afternoon. At the church office this morning the statement was made tMt the members of the general ooard of education of the church had not met since conference and it was not . known Just who did comprise the board. "Was the name of Joseph M. Tanner presented at the general conference?" was asked. , . "I think not," was the answer. V "Will he continue' to be a member of the board?'? was asked. . - . 'That I cannot state." - In not -presenting the name of Mr. Tanner at the afternoon meeting as a member of the. board of education, however how-ever it was not the only time that his name was not mentioned for confirmation confirma-tion on Sunday. In the evening the semi-annual conference of the church Sunday-schools was held ln the Tabernacle, Taber-nacle, at which the officers of the association asso-ciation were sustained. . For .the last few years Mr. Tanner has been second counselor of this branch of the church organization, ths president being Joseph F. Smith and the first counselor George Reynolds. - The name of Tanner was not presented. It was stated at the office of the Juvenile Ju-venile Instructor, the official organ of the Sunday-schools', this morning that it was probable that a successor to Mr. Tanner would be selected later. "I cannot say," said a member of the board, "if Brother Tanner is still a member of the board or not' I do not think that his name was presented at the meeting Sunday night" Joseph M. Tanner is admitted by his closest friends to be a polygamlst, and it is alleged that he has taken two wives sinoe the manifesto of President Woodruff. He has been of more than ordinary note as a member of the church for a number , of years. He served as a missionary to Germany and Turkey and later to Jerusalem, some twelve or fifteen years ago. After his return to Utah he went to Harvard and graduated with high honors frtijn the law department. . . - In 1896 he was appointed as president of the Agricultural college at Logan, from which position he was removed four years later on the ground that he was living in polygamy. He was the first reporter of the Supreme court under un-der Statehood and edited five volumes of the court reports. Mr. Tanner is 47 years of age a native na-tive of Provo and is a cousin of Henry 8. Tanner, former Judge' of the civil division of the City court. , , It has been understood that Mr. Tanner Tan-ner Is now a resident of Mexico. This, however, is not correct. Mr. Tanner Tan-ner resided in -Mexico for some time, but he left the southern republic about six weeks ago. and Is now In Canada, where he has heavy land interests.
