A' special 'train bearing Secretary of War Wil-I Wil-I 11am H. Taft and. the Congressional party and Miss Alice RoosevelVdaugh-ter RoosevelVdaugh-ter of the President, pulled into Ogden yesterday afternoon, leaving an hour later for San Francisco'.- The train consisted of eight cars. In charge ot p. S. Roblev formerly of Ogden'. Og-den'. As soon as the train arrived Miss Roosevelt left the cars and with other members of the party strolled up and down the platform for a half hour. . Secretary Taft was Interviewed during dur-ing the stay of the train at Ogden. He said that he was not to be Secretary of- State, as the President had ordered him . to continue his trip to the Philippines. Philip-pines. -Secretary Taft was' asked if his reply was iiot tentative, with the suggestion that his present mission to the Philippines Philip-pines would first have to be completed, and that after his return he would receive re-ceive the mantle that has but fallen from the shoulders of John Hay. . Secretary Taft smiled at the suggest tion, but did not deny It, and left the assumption in the minds of -the newspaper news-paper men that after his return to the United States in September -he will take up the Nation's diplomacy where John Hay left off. Secretary Taft said that the Russo-Japanese, Russo-Japanese, war might" well be considered ended, in view of the President's successful suc-cessful efforts to secure, a peace commission. com-mission. . "China is our ' chief menace - now," said the Secretary of War. "The feeling feel-ing of the Chinese With regard to our exclusion law is none too friendly. Under .this law the Chinese students and merchants are also excluded. This excludes their gentility. We want their merchants and their trade, but we do not want their coolies. I hope that a new law may be formed, which will admit the merchants and Btudents, but at the same time exclude the coolies." |
