We-are today face to face with a new and prohibitive German tariff designed to keep out every pound of American breadstuffs and provisions. Retaliation has been tried at tremendous tremen-dous cost to our producers and - manufacturers man-ufacturers and is a failure." CHICAGO. Aug. 16. The national reciprocity re-ciprocity conference today began a two days' session at the Illinois theater, 600 delegates from all parts of the country coun-try having assembled to discuss reciprocal recip-rocal j trade relations with other countries, coun-tries, amendment of the Dingley tariff law, alterations of the Interstate com--merce laws and the kindred matters. The West sent a large delegation, the great stock-raising and farming industries indus-tries being especially -Well represented. Manufacturers from the Eastern States are also strongly represented. A notable feature of the conference was the. attendance of foreign Consuls resident In Chicago, representing nearly near-ly every country In the world. The conference was called to order at 10 15 o'clock this morning by A. D. Sanders of Chicago. He said: "The establishment of fairer, trade |
