Show ST. CLEMENT. St. Clement's day. commemorated on November 23. was Included In a proclamation proclama-tion of 1540 which ordered "neither that children should be decked, nor go about upon St. Nicholas. St. Katherlne. St. Clement, the Holy Innocents, and such like dayes." But It does not seem to have had much effect; for we find, much later than 1540. that it was the custom In Wor. cestershlre for the village boys to go from house to house on St. Clement's day singing: Catherine and Clement be nere, be here; Some of your apples and some of your beer; Some for Peter and some for Paul. And some for Him that made us all. Clement was a good old man; For his sake give us some; Not of the worst, but some of the best. And God will send your soul ,to rest. -London Chronicle. |
