Show GANS STEADILY GLIDES BACKWARD What is the matter with Joe Gans Is he a "back number" for good? In his flgnt with James Edward Shakespeare Shakes-peare Britt he made about as good a showing as Tod Sloan would with Frank Gotch. Al Herford, his manager, man-ager, said the California climate affected affect-ed the man from Baltimore. Now, in Philadelphia last night, before be-fore the Washington Sporting club, Hufe Turner of California, literally permitted per-mitted Gans to go the short Journey of six rounds with him. Turner put it all over the dusky fighter and at no stage did Gans have a look in. Turner could have put him out. from the press reports, but through, sheer generosity,' permitted him to be on his feet at the end of the half-dozen rounds which are all the Quaker City will stand for. Al Herford was around after the fight offering to wager any part of the Bank of England that Gans could put Turner up ln the air on a return fight. One of these days some one will take Herford seriously and make him show up his brand of stage money. Gans' showing of late has been far from miserable it ia nothing short of being rank. If It keeps up it will be a case of "Back. back, back to Baltimore" Balti-more" for good for Gans. Gans is getting so he puts up a worse contest than a schoolboy. What is the reason? It .must not be forgotten, however, that Gans and Herford are smoother than the man whs makes vaseline, and when it comes down to "slick work" and schemes, they are there strong. But that does not obliterate oblit-erate the fact that everyone that Gans has put on the gloves with lately seems to have it on him. Why. even "Young Corbett" in training with Gans, used to hit him at will and if "Young Corbett" has it on Gans, well, he had better go back to his old mammy's home, where the oysters come from, and dlr out his toys of childhood. The following is commended to Joe: The little toy dog is covered with dust. But sturdy and stanch it stands; The littie toy soldier is red with must. And his musket molds in his hands. Joe, if he don't look up, will soon be back in the infant class, for his showing show-ing has been of that order. He reminds one of the story credited to Jim Corbett. Cor-bett. Corbett had a bulldog. "Is he a blue-blooded Bo'ston terrier?" some one asked Jim. "Hush." said Jim. "He thinks he is, but he isn't." " .
