Show EXPRESS MESSENGER i IS SHOT BY HOLD-UP REDDING. Cal., Oct. 10 A single highwayman high-wayman held up the Redding-De Lamar stege today at 11 o'clock and shot and perhaps fatally wounded Wells, Fargo & Co.'s express messenger, D. N. Haskell. The stage was conveying money from this city to pay the employees of the Bully Hill mine. The messenger occupied the second seat. At a point three miles west of the Pit river bridge, a masked man halted the stage. When Haskell leveled his shotgun at the robber the latter fired. One bullet pierced Haskell's abdomen and the other Lit him on the foot. The. Sheriff and big possea are now out The wife of the messenger, with Dr. White and Express Agent Dunn, ft gone to the scene. Haskell is one of the most popular messengers in the employ 'of the company, and the robber may be lynched If caught. Stage Driver Imrfcr outran the robber and the specie was saved. |
