Show LOSING $21,800 AT ROULETTE, HE FLEES GOLDFIELD. Nev.. Jsn. 9. William A Mears. reputed to be a member of the Union League club of Philadelphia, and a mining broker, who floated the Oro Hondo Mining company of the Black Hills a few years ago and cleared a quarter of a million dollars, has "welched" on roulette games here for $21,800 and left town. He Is believed be-lieved to be in Chicago or Philadelphia. Mears introduced himself here as a man with a million to invest. He gave two public dinners at which the Gold-field Gold-field record was made in champagne drinking. At various gambling-houses he did not lose once for a considerable ! Huf'luck changed. He lost $9800 at one sitting. When asked for a settlement settle-ment he said: "Tomorrow." At another an-other place Mears lost $1500 the same night. Throughout the sitting he bought wine and cigars and paid for them with chips. Again he said: Tomorrow." To-morrow." He went to another gambling-house and lost $10,600. again saying: say-ing: "Tomorrow." Next day Mears disappeared.. A search cf two weeks has failed to reveal re-veal his whereabouts. Proprietors of gambling-houses threaten to have Mears arrested for obtaining money under false pretenses. |
