The prompt work of the fire department, depart-ment, after a bard run In the heat, saved the terrace and kept the damage down to a minimum. . The fire originated in the apartments of Mr. and Mrs. L. M. Walden, who occupy oc-cupy a parr of the second floor of the terrace. Mrs. Walden had lighted a coal oil stove to prepare lunch, when the telephone rang, and she answered It. If It had not been for this circumstance, circum-stance, she would have almost certain- ly Deen seriously it not dangerously burned. The ' Instant she closed the door between herself and the room In which the stove was burning, the stove exploded and filled the room with a sheet of flame. For a while it looked as " though the entire apartment would be destroyed, de-stroyed, and the flames would communicate commu-nicate to the garret and spread over the entire building. The fire department depart-ment made a good run and arrived In time to confine the fire to the single room. : The alarm was responded to by the department from No. 4, and. by a hose wagon from headquarters. A few mo ments later the small engine was called from headquarters. This was made necessary by the low water pressure. The engine was not used, as the flames were extinguished by the use of chemicals. chem-icals. About twenty families and Clarence McCoy's .drug store occupy Park terrace. |
