Mrs. Mary ; Mabel Rogers was hanged u at the Vermont State prison at Windsor at 1 :13 o'clock this afternoon "' for the murdrr of her husband, Marcus Rogers, at Bennington Au-. j gust 13, 1902. Mrs. Rogers was pronounced dead by the prison of ft- dais at l'd27. , ' - . . . . The execution took place after, the woman had twice been re- ' prieved on account of appeals made in her case by her counsel and j after the United States Supreme court had refused to take action in the easel, Only a comparatively few persons witnessed the hanging, - the number being restricted to those permitted to attend by the laws j cf Vermont. She maintained her composure to the last '. WINDSOR. Vt, Dec. 8. A telephone message, from White River Junction to the State prison here, sent by Attorney Charles A. McCarthy, representing- Mrs. ' Mary M. Rogers, to the effect that Gov. Bell had declined to grant a reprieve, Indicated that the last possibility of interference in-terference with the execution of the woman, set for this afternoon, had vanished. The lawyer's Information waa verified a few momenta later by an official telephone call from Gov. BeU to Sheriff Henry II- Peck. The final arrangements ar-rangements for carrying put the death sentence were made. . . v few miles north of here was Mrs. Roe;- ; ers' attorney, ready to make the final ; legal plea in her behalf. Mrs. Jessie Parlton of Cincinnati, armed with ,.a petition for clemency signed by thousands of women, had also come on from Rutland and awaited the executive. , .. Her lUmarkable Career. The career of Mrs. Rogers has been-a remarkable one. A wife at 18 years of age and a murderess at 19. she is but 23 ' on the -day set for her death.. I Sheriff Peck came from White River Junction on an early train. He seemed considerably affected by the prospect before be-fore him. It was recalled that he had at one time headed a movement among ti -county officers to- secure a reprieve for the condemned woman. . . Sheriff Peck was not personally to act as executioner. He had delegated all th actual work to deputies. As high Sheriff of Windsor county the law required him to be present at the hanging, however. No One Admitted to Prison. At the prison no one was admitted during dur-ing the forenoon except persons directly ; connected with the Institution or the , execution. All attempts to gain Informa- " tlon concerning Mrs. Rogers' condition j were frustrated hy the guard at the pits- I on entrance. Finally, however, three newspaper representatives who by ruling of the officers were the only press men permitted to witness the hanging wera escorted into the prison. Governor and Party Arrive. ' Gov. Charles J. Bell and party arrived from Chicago by way of Montreal at . a. m. today. E. B. VU Dec. t For the second time this town is. crowded with strangers who have sought the vicinity of the death scene of Mary Mabel Rogers, whose execution exe-cution waa set for the hour between noon and 1 o'clock today. Few received permits per-mits to actually witness the hanging. Hope for the condemned woman waa practically abandoned early today. The Sheriff's deputy chosen to spring the trap arrived during the night and concluding arrangements were promptly made. To Hake the Final Plea. Awaiting Gov. Attorney McCarthy brought a number , of documents including several affidavits In support of the allegation that Mrs. Rogers' antecedents had not all been . sound mentally. Messrs. Governor Refused. The conference lasted about thirty min- ; utes. It was terminated by the positive declination of Gov. Boil that he would not Interfere In the execution. Gov. Bell saidr I believe I know the sentiment of the people of Vermont as well a does anyone. any-one. I see nothing to discuss and I know of no law that is not as much for a - man as for a man.
