The retail traders trad-ers of the large manufacturing centers oKKngland have declared war on the hundreds of girls' clubs organised In mill., fa'-torlea and commercial house" members 'with o4ndy, silk stockings, underwear and other apparel at much lower prlres than asked at the stores. The retailers have- lout thousands of pound, yearly through the activities of these rlubs. and their trnde In. many products has been permanently curtailed. . . cluba la Jaadag -brought by ths British Federation of Confectioners, who are seeking to hsve the confection trade of the clubs stopped as being an unfair un-fair form of trading. "Many of these rlubs deal direct with the manufacturers and get better terms and prices than the shopkeepers." shopkeep-ers." said an official of the confectioners' confec-tioners' association. "They are not confined to the fac-tries fac-tries and mills, but In Yorkshire and Lancashire churches and fjunday schools now have these clubs, and their effect on the retail trade la very serious." The total amount of money taken in by the clubs Is said to be enormous, and It Is not uncommon for girls earning earn-ing two and three pounds a week to spend on an average of ten shillings or' more for candy alone. |
