Elders have drifted Into a intro formally ot nicking an Interest In their faith and In their pru > era I would remind them that there la I imbalance imb-alance In this desire and that It la I of highest Importance that the people bo taught of Ood Anti the means appointed ap-pointed by which they laborb1no BO Imythat tho taught Is I that those that labor In the ministry shall peak as moved upon by the Holy Ghost The end of all preaching of all Instruction In-struction as I understand It Is I to beget be-get faith In the hearts of the hearers and the reason why It In 1 of such great I importance thnt filth be Implanted In the hearts of the children of men Is I because be-cause faith Is I the Incentive to all action ac-tion the foundation of all righteousness righteous-ness Hence the labors of the servant of Ood In all gea of the world havebeen to Implant faith In the hearts of the people Faith Is I not the first principle prin-ciple ot the Gospel merely on account or some conventional arrangement that has been made It Is the Hint principle of the Gospel because of the nature of the thing Itself from Its nature It comes first It being oa I have already stated the Incentive to all action the driving force the power which Impels I men to repentance and to every good word and work In regard to this principle prin-ciple of faith I want to read a brief quotation from the third lecture on the subject of faith In the Doctrine and Covenants delivered to a school of IIderm In Klrtllln In an early day oC the Church and I fear somewhat neglected by the Saints and l perhapi by some of the Elders In these days It Is I a very logical statement of tire principles that enter Into the subject of faith and I want to address myself more especially In the youth who are present upon this subject The doctrine I doc-trine Is stated as follows Lt us here observe that three things are necessary In order that any rational and Intelligent being may exercise ex-ercise faith In God unto life and sal vitlic vitlicFirst the Idea that lie actually exists ex-ists Second a correct Idoa oC III a charno ter perfections and attributes Thtidlyan actual knowledge that the course of life which he Is pursuing Is I 1 I according to Ills will For without an acquaintance with these three Important Im-portant facts the faith of every rational ration-al being must be Imperfect and unproductive unpro-ductive The first thing ccoary to that faith that shall be Sufficient to obtain life and salvation Is the Idea that Cod exlt It would not take long truly to demonstrate the truth of tha doctrine The force of It Is very enslly seen from the negative standpointby which I mean this Why Is I It that men who I claim to be atheists men who do not believe In God why Is It that they do not repent of their I In1 Why is I It that they do not receive baptism for the remission of In1 Why Is It that thy are not found to Ing to walk In harmony with the requirements of Gods laws It Is I all easily answered hy Saying fthpydc 10 not believe In tile exltenca oC 01 and consequently 410 not consider themselves under any ob ligations hatsuvr to kp Ills com mllnment or obey His ordinances so we who hv eycd to keep tho commandments 0 f lea If the Iden l of Ttm existnef I 1t not heen I Ili our mind o would be j oat title thy ale ive would not have com unto 111m we would not now Ile seeking to Itecit Ills am landments because having Ibo Idea that Ho did not ixlst of court II would follow that we would not have believed that Ho had given any com rnandments to bo obeyed hence the Prophet Paul who perfectly understood l this subject I think says In relation co It that without faith It Is t tintless hI o to please God for he that eomth to > God must believe that He Is I that Is I that He exists and ho added fur Ihr and It would be well for ui tot hold It to-t In mind as we go on this ptfttem ent that He Is I a lewarder of all those who diligently seek Him Time will not
