Show Where here We W MisS Missed d. d It From 1850 to 1860 there was was- wasa a great struggle to obtain a shorter route between the east and California than the old ones onesby onesby onesby by Panama and Nicaragua Finally early in 1861 a treaty was was- concluded between the Mexican government t and our state depart department bent ment ent for three rights of way across Mexico and by the terms of the treaty if either government failed to maintain peace over either er of these routes the oth other r had the right light to send in soldiers to enforce it But when the treaty came before our senate for ratification it was tabled on the ground that our government had quite as much to do at home as it could possibly attend to But had that treaty been ratified think what an advantage it would give our government today We would have the right to go down there and call every everyone one of the murderous scoundrels that are soaking their country with blood and devastating it to account our plea being that the rights of of 61 way vay must be kept open for commerce Again had the treaty been ratified and the northern route opened those states would long ong ago have been filled with Americans Ameri- Ameri cans ans and there would have been no revolution against Diaz but rather gather ther about the most promising of new countries would have Been expanding rapidly and would have been prosperous beyond anticipation |
