N State where he had resided The church leader served Uintah County in the Utah House of Representatives and later in inthe inthe inthe the State Senate representing all all of Eastern Utah In 1920 he was elected to the U U. S. S House of Representatives where he served six terms Silver Proponent Mr Colton was chairman of or orthe the Public Lands Committee in Congress and was a proponent of the silver base for U. U S. S currency He was a candidate for governor of Utah in 1940 after his retirement retirement retire retire- ment from C Congress Prior to becoming a congressman congress congress- man he was prominent in business business business busi busi- ness circles at Vernal He owned a ranch and conducted a livestock business there He was an organizer organizer organizer or or- and officer of Emerald Oil Co Uintah Telephone Co Uintah Power and Light Co and other firms in the area Mission l President In 1933 he was appointed president president dent ent of the Eastern States L D S Mission and served four years He was a member of the general board of the L D S Sunday School A graduate of Brigham Young University Mr Colton was a member of the B BYU Y U Emeritus Club In 1944 he was elected president of the B BYU Y U Alumni He was graduated from the University of Michigan 1 with a Doctor of Law degree He was born Sept 15 1876 at Mona lona Juab County a son of Sterling D. D and Nancy Wilkins Colton CoHon lIe He moved to Vernal with his parents who were among original settlers of that city in 1879 He married Mazie lazie Hall in inthe inthe inthe the Salt Lake L D S Temple in 1900 She died in Vernal in 1905 Married in Temple He married Grace o on June 17 1909 in the Salt Lake LakeL L D S Temple STemple Besides his widow he is survived survived sur-I sur sur sur- by a son and three daughters daughters daugh daugh- Mrs Irs J.
