It will willbe willbe willbe be observed that while North had no doubt there was game in the hand when partner opened he bided his time with a over one-over-one response in order to elicit as much information as possible Though h his hand contained the proper count for a two no trump re response response response re- re he preferred first to test out the suit possibilities South having 19 points in high cards jumped to two no trump At this Uris point North diagnosed the slam He held 14 points and partner partner partner part part- ner had promised 19 or 20 However However How How- ever he took the precaution on to in investigate investigate investigate in- in for the best possible final contract by bidding bidding- three diamonds South then showed his diamond support after which I North showed the ace of clubs Now South contracted for a small slam This was as far as he hedared hedared hedared dared go since for all he knew partners partner's diamonds might have been headed by the king jack and he was not inclined to risk all on the chance of picking up the queen of trumps North bid seven with complete confidence He marked his partner with eight cards in inthe inthe inthe the red suits and placed him with witha a trick in clubs and a half a trick in spades He could therefore visualize 11 top card tricks to which he added two ruffs for a total of 13 I came in for considerable abuse from one North player who jumped to six no trump after his partners partner's of two no trump and only 11 tricks were scored since no squeeze could be devel devel- Its Us your fault he said you told me if I had a good opening opening opening open open- ing bid and my partner opened the bidding and jumped there was wasa a slam and since my hand was suitable for no trump I bid six six In self-defense self I would like to say that my rule contains the proviso proviso proviso pro pro- viso that the best final contract is reached In this case I think it will not be disputed that the diamond diamond diamond dia dia- mond suit offers the superior con con- tract Copyright 1951 Charles H Goren |
