e. e Thus the thc prep star all-star game becomes a midsummer version of the justly famed Shrine East West football game of New Years Year's day And as such the game takes on added importance and dignity J Story Behind the Story Naturally this blending of the coaches and into this worthwhile project didn't happen overnight o Theres There's quite I a story behind it A few years years ears ago a young g man moved mo to Utah to work worl asa as asa a n chemist in one of the smelters Since the man and his wife weren't blessed with children of their own they began visiting the crippled childrens children's ward at St. St Marks i And so interested did this man and his wife become that eventually c he gave up his chemists chemist's job in in order to be bc able to to devote more time to his children Eventually E he found work as sexton at a local loea cemetery where his ho hours r of work allowed him freedom to work and Ila play with the children the kids who needed comforting and encouragement t. t Mohammed Goes to the Mountain In time the Shrine appointed this man Ralph Baker as chairman of a committee which works closely with the c children and the hospital And it was Mr Ir Baker onetime chemist who mixed the ingredients for this most worthwhile of all Salt Lake City sports benefits Mr Baker feels hes he's accomplishing a two-fold two purpose in getting the prep star all-star game designated as a Shrine promotion promo promo- tion When I first came to Utah I noticed prejudices among old and young alike Every state has similar problems but I thought then if there could be a way to get the youngsters together together to to- to-I to gether for a few fe weeks each year we might break down many of these barriers We Ve discussed bringing in professional teams for the game Mr Baker continued but at qt t last we thought this plan was the better better- since the game would be the means of curing the physical cal ailments of one group of children while straightening out the mental kinks of another group of youngsters And so on Aug 20 the cream of the states state's teen-age teen boys will be bruising b bof and battling it out to raise funds that hundreds of little guys and gals may have a chance in the future to enjoy such pleasures themselves And at the same time the boys playing the game will be becoming better acquainted with kids their own ages from all over the state and theres there's nothing like a broader viewpoint to shrink prejudices Its It's just another of those famous two for one American bargains and it would be well to reserve that date on the calendar now Shoes Shoe's on the Other Foot Now Some seven years ago in late June of 1942 we congratulated congratulated con con- Salt Lake City and Utah upon NOT securing
