Show Round Merry-Go-Round K Scribe Analyzes Candidates Candidates' I Good Bad Points n s j B By J Drew Pearson 1 i Ed Editors Editor's tor note note Drew Drew Pearsons column 1 today takes the form of a letter to his hit J J. daughter on the question of how she should vote ote i Mrs MIS George Arnold t Los Angeles Cal J Dear Daughter Daug 0 It is difficult even for an old and seasoned sea sea- fc Boned political hand like your father t toy tot c advise one who will will vote for the first I time V t Sometimes a seasoned seasoned political ob erv t tends to size up an election the s same ame w i ia a couple of doctors discuss an important t surgical operation They become so ton lm mersed in the technicalities that they forget for for- 1 get the patients arc human beings and T that elections are a clash between several million human beings to pick another human human hu hu- huo o I Iman man being as their leader r 11 As a technician I would say that Gov cloy 1 Dewey had conducted one of the themo the mo most t astute and skillful campaigns in re recent re- re 1 cent years He made nobody mad H He 1 called no names he answered no challenges tHe t t He ignored a great many of the issues Dewey even een managed to escape answering answer answer- 1 ing a question every other ca candidate has hu had to answer namely place his war record ret rec- i ord before the voters However he managed managed managed man man- man aged ed to duck this even though Mrs Irs 1 Ma la Ia thilda Burling Burling- head of the Gold St Star St.- r Mothers specifically asked him in a tele gram if he had a farm deferment in 1942 Governor Dewey also managed to visit most of the 48 states and make severer several j hundred speeches without any real discussion discus discus- sion of the basic issues In the campaign This again was astute politics For if if r he had really talked about reclamation when he was in the west he would have stepp stepped d' d on the toes either of the power companies companies' or the power companies' companies enemies and would thereby have lost votes on either cither side 1 1 Teamwork under Dewey Naturally j Dewey Deweys s 's evasion of these issues has disappointed dis dis- t appointed some people But looking at it il from the political technicians technician's point of view a lot of corners arc are cut by candidates to achieve their main victory goal goal goal- vIctory 1 Harry Truman of course has walked up to the plate and taken a healthy swing at every issue He has not ducked one one curve urve ball The Thc country knows kno exactly where he hc stands which is his chief trouble r in the south But the country also knows tha that that- whereas Truman's Truman s 's record is excellent on Oi on 1 paper his record of performance is inept and sometimes inexcusable He seems to t ta ha have vc surrounded himself w with th men dedi to the task of sabotaging all the R fine things their boss stood for on paper papery rH On the other hand Deweys Dewey's record is in ia New York state has been excellent both bothon on paper and in performance And the thc men around him are Roosevelt brain brain- trusty brain type dedicated to do or die for the bosS boss and his policies So undoubtedly you'll have teamwork in the White House under t Dewey It may be very careful some some times cold-blooded cold teamwork j Dewey Deuey may prove miracle prove miracle man In mon In sil-M sil the candidates also Ing up however you have to take a look at the political p par parties i ties behind them The Republican par party y 5 since the Civil war has drawn its financial financial finan t. t cial support from the he bankers the I ties and big business Generally of course people get what they pay for and the big bigi I G GO GOP 0 P contributors have not expressed disc dis l dis-l i t. t satisfaction with the results If Tom Dewey can break away iron froth this traditional G GOP 0 P hookup he will b ba i be-i beia 4 1 a miracle man He is a tough little guy gut r rand and once elected he may be able to do it This will be the most interesting thing t of all to watch t I Harry Truman has put up a courageous and magnificent fight If he had fought M u ashard hard and as effectively during all his three years h ti hp would not be in the trouble he hi heis heis is today But thanks to the combination J of and he cannot canno i possibly win this election He will rollup ron roll roll up a bigger popular vote than previously va v i expected a Meanwhile lets let's hope that Tom Dewey j i I will be as broadminded as he is tough and can bring his party back to the 1 t of Teddy Roosevelt Abe Abc Lincoln and ard pre-Civil pre war days it Well VeIl that's how the candidates and tie the 1 parties stack up I dont don't know that Ice Ive given you any real advice because it its it's a very cry confused situation And the only j thing pm Im I'm sure of is that we face one oLe I Ithe the most interesting and important periods f fin l' l in our history I Love from Your father |
