D Penrose 1110 East and their daughter daugh daugh- ter Marilyn 8 were resting safely at home Tuesday following their rescue Monday afternoon from a stranded plane near the northernmost northernmost northernmost northern northern- most tip of Great Salt lake Credited with the rescue were Robert A. A Ballard Ogden instructor tor for Charlesworth Charesworth Flight Inc Melvin Baird a civil air patrol lieutenant and J. J Lynn Hatch Tremonton Tremont n. n Mr Ballard and Mr Baird in a light plane and Mr Hatch in another small fully maneuvered their light planes onto a clay roadbed near the stranded couple Hovering over the landscape the two pilots picked the smoothest terrain terrain terrain ter ter- ter- ter rain available and landed with pinpoint pinpoint pinpoint pin pin- point accuracy While White Mr Baird voluntarily stayed behind to await g ground gound rescue parties working toward vard the group over the soft quagmire the two remaining pilots flew the flew the stranded family to safety Reported Missing l Mr and Mrs Penrose and their daughter were reported missing Sunday afternoon on a flight from Burley Idaho to Salt Lake City They were scheduled to arrive here Sunday between and pm p.m. We were flying back from Idaho Idaho Idaho Ida Ida- ho at about pm p.m. Sunday Mr Penrose said uJ Just st as we started over the lake one of our rear cylinders blew out and the plane began to shake violently Knowing he couldn't k keep ep his plane aloft Mr Penrose circled the trembling craft back toward the lake shore landing without mishap in a clay roadbed near the old Quaker salt works and about four miles due east o of the abandoned Locomotive Springs airfield We slept in the plane cabin that night and were fairy fairly warm Mr Mrs Penrose said About the only thing that bothered us w were re the theco co coyotes otes howling Builds Fire Snow c clouds covered the area area Monday morning and Mr Penrose Penro e built a fire with some matches he found in an abandoned shed While relatives and friends waited waited wait wait- ed for news of the lost couple and their daughter a a. volunteer air rescue rescue rescue res res- cue service swung into int a action tion Throughout t the e morning approximately approximately xi- xi 20 planes engaged engaged- in hi the search while pilots in airports in inthe inthe inthe the northern section of ot the state were alerted for service The stranded silver and red ship was discovered by Mr Ballard and Mr Baird at 1215 pm p.m. The searchers returned to Brigham City where they notified p peace peace-of and called Joe Bergin Utah state aeronautics director Land on Road Later Mr Hatch joined them and the two planes returned to the area to drop food and soft drinks At about pm p.m. the two planes landed on the tiny road strip next to the downed aircraft Mr Penrose returned to Tremonton Tremon- Tremon ton with Mr Ballard and they were joined later by the mother and her daughter flying with Mr Hatch The he family returned to Salt Lake City from Tremonton arriving home at 8 30 pm p.m. Awaiting Mr and Mrs Penrose were their three other children Carol 14 Don 12 and Lowell 3 Mr Penrose who had logged hours of ot flying time had made the Burley to Salt Lake run five or six times time I think Ill I'll wait until summer to fly that route again he said Its a little too cold this time of year |
