L Love state chairman of the Utah Freight Loss and Damage Prevention committee According to Mr Love claims for rail and truck shipment losses have increased per percent percent cent ceni in the period from 1939 to 1946 The loss increase began began- during the war years when competent competent com corn help and sufficient help was hard to get and when wartime war- war time tune shortage hortage of food metal corrugated cardboard containers cotton and burla burlap required the use of substitutes An increase in loss and damage was understandable then But the losses have continued although the war is over help is plentiful and better packaging materials are again available From all aU reports the problem today is incompetency and carelessness in the handling of goods It is human failure rather than material failure The point that must be emphasized is that it is the people as a pay for this loss and damage They pay through higher freight rates and higher prices They p pay y through the waste of valuable commodities many of which are in short s sup sup- p- p ply A case in point is the he waste of sugar and other foods through breakage and other damage at a time when sugar is rationed and when there are world-wide world shortages of food The Ut Utah h Freight Loss and Damage Prevention committee is directing a campaign to get the cooperation of shippers truck lines railroads and their to reduce this heavy loss It is a campaign which deserves public support because it is finally in the publics public's interest Unreasonable loss and damage in shipments is a terrific economic waste and every effort should be made to encourage more care in handling go goods ds and the employment employment employment em em- of more competent help in order to redu reduce e that unnecessary unnecessary unnecessary un un- un- un necessary waste |
