4 A Serious Threat to Utah TooT Too T PHE THE HE curtailment of production at the Geneva steel mill due to lack of man power in the mill and in the coal mine which supplies the essential coal for plant operations is a serious threat not only to vital war production of that plant but also to Utah's plans f for r future peacetime operations of this industry Walter Vatter Mathesius president of the company in making the announcement revealed that the plant has been limping along at 70 per cent of production c capacity despite the fact that army and navy demands and war production board allocations call for per cent capacity operations That clearly emphasizes how serious this curtailment is in its impairment of our war effort But it is serious too for the future of the Geneva plant Utah is extremely anxious to have Geneva attain per cent capacity production now while it is operating as a government plant because that will establish a standard of operating procedure procedure procedure pro pro- and costs by which prospective peacetime operators can measure the possibilities for profitable operation of the establishment establish establish- ment 1 Furth Furthermore it will mean that any bugs in the hew new plant will be found and eliminated in advance advance so so that postwar Geneva will be bea a smooth running going ste steel l plant in every way not not a hypothetical paper plant but a fully operating goi going g concern Both from a patriotic win the win war war standpoint and from the standpoint of df its own selfish postwar interests therefore Utah ought to do everything within its power to see seeto to it that sufficient sufficient suf suf- man power is made available at Geneva to permit steady expansion of its operations until it re reaches ches per cent of capacity capacity capacity ca ca- ca- ca production No single state objective for Utah officials organizations workers or unions is more important than that right now Lets Let's concentrate on it and lick this Geneva man roan manpower i power power problem
