A White 60 commander of the division former Salt Lake and City newspaper news paper man died at his Camp Clackamas home near Portland Sunday night of at a stomach all ail ment General White born in 1881 f in Longbranch TIt HI moved with his f parents to Salt Lake City at the age o of 7 and when 16 he began begaj work for The Salt Lake Tribune After serving as a bugler during the the Spanish-American Spanish war he re returned returned reo re- turned to newspaper work In Salt Lake City prior to Joining the Portland Oregonian staff in 1904 He resigned his position with that paper in 1915 to devote his time tine timeto timeto to military duties He was a prolific writer of fiction lie fie tion under the name of Ared White He was on the staff of General John J. J Pershing i in France and later reorganized the Oregon national guard In 1934 he received the French cross of the legion of honor for his part partIn partin partin in the formation of the American Legion He is survived by his widow a daughter and a brother |
