Show j r Tepee Topics E By TOMMIE PORTER Being what we are we all bemoan and cry out in iii protest some more some less against what we think is our out sorry fate in the various phases of life Particularly is this true in our athletic and recreational recreational recreational endeaVors We crab grouse or groan because we wc have some difficulty in winning or in getting a high score And usually the better we are equipped physically themore the themore more prone we are to this kic kicking ing Here in Salt Lake City there Is something which should make all of us who have a reasonably full possession of our natural faculties deeply ashamed if we do any of that hat crabbing Even if we are of the sel select ct few who carry carry on without complaint this is something which should make us truly humble That something is a group of blind people who gather two or three times each week laughing and joking to thoroughly thoroughly thor thor- thoroughly enjoy a few games of bowling with never a complaint complaint complaint com com- plaint when they get a split or the ball goes into the gutter One ch chip chap p even bowls left handed because he has lost three fingers of his bis right hand band The handicap those people must overcome to just bowl bowl bowl- not to get a good bood score or win the match match match-is is something which would keep most of us on the sidelines The J enjoyment and sportsmanship they display is a great object lesson for even the best of we folks foks who still have our our precious sight With the aid of one me chap who is not completely blind these sportsmen locate their ball on the rack ack feel with a foot for the foul line and locate themselves a short distance from the gutter in similar fashion Then they roll the ball down a drive they ca cannot not see and listen for the impact of ot ball and pins We have a mental picture of how those pins are set up says one participant and c can cn n usually tell if a few or many pins fall The pin boy then calls out the number of pins knocked down and if necessary tells the player which pins remain None of t those ose people can see the pins only one or two can even distinguish the alley from rom the runway Yet they are not at all self-conscious self they are untroubled when delivering delivering delivering deliver deliver- ing the ball while a mate or a rival stands beside them or is moving oving on the adjoining runway They are mutually happy when one gets a strike or spare while the one who gets a split or gutters the ball dismisses that trouble with a laugh or a smile True their scores are not high but many Salt Lakers who are not so handicapped have bowled scores no better or at at best little better And would that we could all enjoy our recreation as these people do Bowling is so pacifying remarks one for it is easy and it gives one such a feeling of companionship We VI Weare e are arc working together as a team during those matches and anda a person feels so good when striving with others for or a common cause It all started recently when the group applied to Jack JackQuinn JackQuinn JackQuinn Quinn Quinn- for use of two of-two two drives at the Orpheum alleys They asked no help from the pin boys or other and requested morning morning morning morn morn- ing reservations not because of self-consciousness self but because we dont don't want to o hinder other bowlers These sessions have as one put it become the high spot of each week and as an example of the unquenchable spirit and sportsmanship of these United States something in which we should all glory |
