| Show ff r rr r J JT T e epee p ee 4 Topics L By TOMMIE PORTER Ogden high school has lost lost to to the army one army one of Utah's finest athletic coaches quiet gentlemanly Charles Dixon Kapple just as he was on the doorstep of another of his many athletic achievements A coach of champions his champions his basketball teams won three state and seven district titles his have annexed annexed annexed an an- four state crowns crowns- crowns Dixon ixon begins active service service- for at least a year year with with the Utah national guard Monday after having completed 20 years of service in prep coaching coaching coaching coach coach- ing at Ogden Friday night Kapple concluded this years year's work with the I Junction City school by directing the Tigers to a victory over overBear overBear overBear i Bear River to clinch a place in the state casaba tournament i of next month In that tourney Kapples Kapple's lads will be coached I by Gilbert who has worked with Dixon and coached football at Ogden since 1937 I It wil wilf be the fourteenth Kapple-coached Kapple team to represent represent represent rep rep- resent Ogden in the state meet In his two years at Logan 21 1920 Dixon developed two district champion teams one of which annexed state honors Three times his Ogden teams gained the finals only to lose the championship game but Dixons Dixon's calm smile never faded and at no time did he display evidence of the nervous tension that is only natural to a coach when his team is under fire in title play One of those championship championship champion champion- ship games was lost to L D S U 17 16 one oneto to Jordan 21 18 and the other 21 16 to Granite while the championship championship championship cham cham- Ogden won in 1932 came only after three overtime overtime overtime over over- time periods a 29 27 score over overY Weber Y eber so the pressure on Kapple must have been rather strong at times His teams have been distinguished by their sportsmanship and clean playing style jn in n addition to being thoroughly grounded in the fundamentals of their sport a credit to their school and the gentleman who coached them Their ranks included such performers as Bill Kinner Mark Ballif Balli now coach at Weber high in Ogden Adam Wesley Bob Gibbons Gibbons Gibbons Gib Gib- I bons Willard Butch Knowles Phil Revell Verl VerI Pierson and Howard oward Keeter who gained state all-state laurels as Kapple himself I I had done in his prep days at Payson when coached by Lee Simmons Dixon served two years in the American expeditionary force during the first World war and andis is now a captain cap of offield offield offield field artillery and a brigade adjutant Perhaps after a year in uniform Kapple will resume I his place among the coaches of Utah In the interim he will be greatly missed by Utah sports followers II I I Among the other coaches who have relinquished coaching duties in Utah for army service are Lyle Tripp a former all- all state football star who piloted Bear River to athletic fame with regional football and basketball titles in 38 1937 Robert Bunker of South Cache another former state all-state Frank Wright former Jordan star who led Uintah high of V Vernal to the state basketball championship in 1939 |
