U S. S Would Be Stupid xa t A A. A A GOOD many foreign newspaper editors statesmen propagandists and diplomats together with some thirsty battle-thirsty or fearful S' S Americans seem convinced that this country will wall soon be be plunged into the world maelstrom ir i- i r 5 of war r Germany Italy and Japan seem so sure that we weare are going to jump into the conflict with both feet In the near future that they are feverishly preparing the battle lines ines so that we will have to fight light on both fronts east and west and perhaps as well have the problem of handling inspired disturbances to the south At t the same time these aggressor nations ares are's are s 's trying their best to frighten us and lure us Into staying out of the war holding a gun in one hand and an olive branch of prospective trade and friendship once Britain Is defeated Inthe in inthe inthe the other y Its It's all very confusing confusing and and a little annoying annoy annoy- ing One would almost think that we didn't ha have e a mind of our own and that we haven't the common sense to conduct our own affairs in a manner which is in our own b best st Interest Lets Let's examine this question of American Involvement In war So much talk is goin on around the world and in the nation about the possibility that it is proper for t the c Amerlean American American Amer Amer- ican lean people to give the question some very serious consideration I aro two possible enemies One is Germany If Ii America is going to go o to war there the other is Japan We might fight either one alone triple axis alliance or no or w we might fight them together We can Ignore Italy because although we may well be fightIng fightIng lightIng fight light Ing against her it would only be as a satellite of Germany If If H we go to war against Germany what would we accomplish Little or nothing We cant can't fight her on land We arent aren't equipped to fight Ight her in the air We dare not weaken our Pacific defenses by sending the weight of our navy across the Atlantic to fight light her at sea All we could really do is support and supplement the British war and effort effort and we could do very little more In a material way than we are doing now There just Isn't any sense therefore In our going to war against Germany If Ii we go to war against Japan what would we accomplish Perhaps a great deal ItIs It Itis Itis is conceivable that we could defeat or strangle Japan already weakened from her long and costly conflict with China ChIna but but it might take years with consequent exhaustion of our finances fi 11 fi nances and our defensive power And we run runa a great risk that rIsk that while we are concentrating our war energies on Japan our aid to Britain would be seriously impaired and Germany might win the European war and become supreme su supreme suo su- preme master of Europe and the Atlantic We might then face lace a two-ocean two war against powerful adversaries with no allies We would be risking our very national existence for the sake of an an uncertain victory In an area thou thou- absolutely vital national interests and In which sands of miles away in which we have no absolutely vital national interests and in which what important interests we do have are not immediately threatened Now lets let's go over that again If we goto go goto goto to war we either cither risk much for lor the sake of an aft uncertain and not too essential victory over Japan or we get ourselves up to our necks inthe In Inthe inthe the European mess with little hope of exercising exercise ing a decisive effect on the outcome Lets Let's look at the the theother other side staying side staying out of war but continuing maximum possible aid to Britain If we do that we will be helping Britain and opposing Germany almost as much as if we entered the war more than Hwe if H we went to war with Japan At the same time we would be maintaining our economic strength and increasing rather than dissipating our defensive de de- e strength Also we would have some hope that we would NEVER have to go to towar towar towar war at all that all that Britain would defeat Germany Germany Germany Ger Ger- many and t that at Japan left high and dry by her axis allies ames would quickly pull in her horns in the far lar east And even if that and Germany finally emerged victorious we r i would be strong and ready to assume the burden as the last fortress of democracy and justice and freedom in the world e Put that way how stupid It would be for America to deliberately go to war From our v town fown selfish standpoint from Britain's standpoint standI standpoint stand stand- I point from the standpoint of the preservation of democracy in the world America course MUST be peace aid to Britain and prepared prepared- ness e eThe The people of America do not want war t Common sense and selfishness demand that we keep out of war That being the case any 1 action plunging this nation into war either in Europe or in A Asia la would be the greatest blunder blun blun- der the worst betrayal of the American people this is nation and her leaders could possibly make 0 HES HE'S SENSITIVE Mayor S SENSITIVE Mayor Frank
