reasons ons to the Parents with infinite care Some Homo Wore Were Too Old 0 A A number of or the children were cre too old to operate upon having hn pAs passed ed the age of 9 3 years yearn ear and others were suffering puttering with afflictions which could not be re re- re lIe ed by the operation which has made the doctor famous Then out of or the little group two children were selected Edwin Winslow Walker and Murll Muril each aged 3 years The little boy was operated upon first nut The case cas was one of double hip dislocation dislo dislo- cation nn and enri an nn Ideal case When hen everything every every- thing thIns had been made ready In the operating op op- op- op crating room th the child was taken Into n on adjoining apartment and placed under under un- un der oer an anaesthetic A moment later Dr Lorenz appeared in the operating room with the child In his arms and Placed It upon the operating table The great reat surgeon on wore a Ii white apron and arid his nl sleeves were rolled d u un leaving his arms arm rm bare bar to tho the elbow Ho lIo was ac nc- nc companied b by his assistant Dr Mud Muel ler who was attired 1 in the same Va way AS At the great Vienna surgeon eon entered the room the assembled physicians arose aroe In a bod body and erected greeted him with applause and In response to the court cour- cour t f t tey W. W y r. pr said that ho would t plan every detail of the operation as best he ho could during Its performance I PO so that the physicians might tul fully understand un un- un- un every moI mo move The child being by this time thoroughly thor thor- I under the influence of ot the anaesthetic an an- aesthetic It was placed ced upon Its back and taking hold of or tho the left l leg Just below below be be- low the knee Dr Lorenz Lorens doubled th the leg up against ag the bOd body and pressed sed It downward toward the table until it seemed as If IC the bones must break brenk You pee flee I bend the leg In tn this way to stretch the posterior muscles sal said the doctor Then turning the child upon It Its side tIde and grasping the ankle In hl his I hand he d the leg until the heel almost touched the childs child's backI back I bend hend the l le leg g this wa way said the doctor to stretch the anterior mus mus- cles des The Tho Operation Described Again turning the child upon UDon his hiI back bak Dr Lorenz bent the le leg Into the position of ot a sitting posture and massaged mac mas caged saed the muscles muscle around the hip Joint with his strong hand haneI working them loose and stretching them Then grasping grasping grasp rasp In ing the folded leg lef which he held perpendicular perpendicular per per- to the reclining body he lie forced it out and straight down to th the surface of the table In a 0 position at right angles to the body This I 1 do said he to stretch and tear the adductor longus the big hlA muscle muscle mus mus- cle dc on the In inside of ot the leg After Atter holding the leg leR In this position for a a. moment or two and massaging the muscles with his hands Dr Lorenz grasped tho the knee in his right hand and the ankle In his hIe left heft pulling the leg out straight This process he repeated several set lie eral times explaining that it was necessary CARlI essary to str stretch the muscle along its whole length to produce satisfactory results Work on the Muscles Alter After this had been done the pelvis pel rest ret made from the block of oC wood was wall pl c placed d under the left hip hll to ral raise e eIt It slightly and th the leg was rals raised d to a n perpendicular position position folded folded of or cour course c at the knee Joint Then Dr Lorenz Lorenz Lo Lo- Lo renz with hIs hla strong hand struck set sev oral eral sharp blows blow upon the adductor I I longus muscle at the point where the thele le leg Joins the bod body at the same time bending benlIn the leg at nt right an angles les to the bod body down toward the table With Hh I firm Orm and determined force orco he bent the thele le leg until the knee rested upon the surface sur face tace ace of ot the table A Again aln he massaged the muscles then brought the I leg g to a n I perpendicular position again Now O said ald h he you ou see nee I grasp rap the leg Just below the knee In my left hand 1 I place the thumb of or my roy right hand against the femur bull ball of ot thigh thighbone I bone anti and resting m my m hand upon the body of oC the child press the femur into the socket where It should be Pressure on Thigh Bono Bone A As ho said paid the words the doctor applied ap ap- ap- ap plied filled what appeared to be only an call easy I pressure against the head of or the thigh h bone bonc and b by Its motion through th the thi I flesh the bone could be easily seen to o oslip I Islip slip down Into the socket where shere it belonged be be- 1 lon longed ed As the bone slipped Into place Dr Mueller grasped It with hit hip hand d to hold It there and Dr Lorenz turned with a n smile upon the doctors who In their intense Interest had risen from their chairs and crowded clo close Q to th the table that they might watch every ery move mo made by the doctor Their re- re to the smile of or the doctor was a 0 burst of heartiest applause But nut that Is not all quietly replied Dr Lorenz and turning the child about he grasped the right leg and commenced com corn the operation to reduce the dislocation die dis location of ot the right hip The same annie procedure was gone through with with the right leg as In the case of ot the left Both Legs Lt-gs Aro Are Bent Dent When this dislocation had lJ been en re reduced reduced reduced re- re both legs were v bent out at right angles to the childs child's hotly body and after r the pelvis rest reet had been placed under the pelvis ls Dr Lorenz Lorens applied th the force of or his hands to each knee bending the legs back buek as far as 38 possible at right rightangle rightangle angle angles to the body After Atter this had been n done and the muscles had be been n thoroughly massaged prepared plaster of or paris bandages that were near at hand were ere bound about the limbs to hold them In this position at right angles to the bod body The bandages were wrapped from the knee Joint on each limb up and around the body to the thickness of or more than half hair an nn Inch thus Incasing that part of the bod body in a solid and immovable ca cast t. t Dr DI Mueller did th the bandaging and as soon a as that had been complete completed com corn the operation was over Not n n. drop of or blood had been spilled d and no knife had been U used N save e to cut away surplus bandage Completes tho the Operation Now Nou ow th the operation Is complete said Dr Lorenz Lorens and the bo boy will viii be all right It may be n a year or more before betor he lie can walk but in time he be will be able to run like a 1 hare This C cast must re remaIn remain remain re- re main on the child about six months In that time the femur will win ha have formed ormed it attachments to its proper socket and the next thing to do after the cast Is r removed mo Is to get the legs leg back hak Into their proper positions This must be bedone bedone bedone done gradually The Tho muscles must bo be massaged managed and the limbs bent toward a parallel position gradually At first tho the bo boy will only be able to hobble ulon along stiffly but hl his limbs will gradually all ally limber and In less lass than two t years i he should be able to walk and run as al aswell well as any on one that is Is If It nothing unexpected unexpected unexpected un un- un- un expected happ happens ns Tho The little boy was then taken from I tho operating table and given Into the arms of his father tather who carried the little one to the mother who had not witnessed the operation The parents were overjoyed and tears bespoke the thankfulness which their lips could not give e utterance to I Murll Muril the little girl who was suffering from a single Ingle dislocation came next and was quickly operated upon the actual time consumed being a 0 little over o one minute During th the performance of oC the tho first operation a crippled bo boy aged about 1 12 15 years ears came Into th the room room and standing n near the foot toot of or the operating operating operating ope ope- rating table watched every movement of or the great surE surgeon eon Then when the operation had been concluded the bo boy hobbled toward the surgeon and asked if anything could be done for him Dr Lorenz Lorens examined the d deformity but discovered red that the bo boy was as suffering from an ailment aliment for tor which he could do 10 nothing and so Informed him hint In tho the most wa way The bO boy was heartbroken heartbroKen heart heart- broKen and team coursed down his cheeks as he turned aa away Discussing operation for dislocation after he had completed his work at the hospital Dr Lorenze said Congenital dislocation of or the hip Joint it IS one of the rarest deformities but Is also 1150 one of ot the most serious ItIs It ItIs Itis Is caused b by a displacement of ot the hip Joints of or the child before birth On each side of or the pelvis pel Is a rounded socket pocket Into which should fit the spherical cal fal fal head of or the femur or thigh h bone I In con congenital dislocation this socket 1 is often absent or Is 19 hued filled up with gristle and bony growth Instead of or fitting In Its proper place the head of or orthe the femur rests against the broad bone of ot th the pelvis pell several inches back of ot Its normal position and is IN twisted FO so that the feet of or the patient turn outward To reduce this the muscles must be thoroughly stretched and torn loose so that the femur can cnn be pressed Into Its Us natural socket Then the leg leE must be beheld beheld beheld held In this position until the femur has had time to form torm Its new attachments to the socket which requires require six or more months After that the le leg must i be gotten b by degrees Into Its proper position and the muscles made elastic clastic b by massage m I am ani giving 1 these free trec exhibitions said MId the doctor doe so that the American physicians may learn the operation and relieve e suffering humanity I do It for forthe forthe forthe the sake sike of or the sufferers The physicians who witnessed th the two to I operations at the hospital and listened I Ito to Dr Lorenz's statements concerning the new method were deeply impressed sed I and a a. number will give the matter such I thought and Investigation as will vill en enable enable en- en able ble them to perform tho the operation I themselves Dinner in Surgeons Surgeon's Honor Dr Loren Lorenz
