I BLAZE IN PORTLAND Thousand Seventy Fire in the Oregon rego i City Portland Ore Feb 23 Fire Fire which started at 1120 this morning destroyed every except two bounded by Front Main 1 and Madison streets and the Willamette ricer The docks facing streets was also burned The The aggregate loss will reach about g the principal n part of which Is Ison r on the flouring rl mill o owned by Albers Schneider The loss on this mill Is about on stock on machinery machinery machin machin- ery and about on the building and docks The other losses are scattered among stables Junk shops a barrel factory fac fac- tory and a Job printing office Two horses valued at O were burned In the livery stable which was destroyed The amount of Insurance carried by the different firms cannot be ascertained at t present but It t Is expected that Albers I J Schneider the h th h heaviest a s cl losers e a are r well l protected by insurance The fire started in N N. Bardie's Bardle's Junk shop presumably from spontaneous combustion com com- bustion and quickly spreading to the adjoining livery stable was well under underway underway way before the fire department could get to work effectively During the progress of the tire fire Henry Albers secretary to the firm of ot Albers Schneider 1 e engaged d in a quarrel with je Proprietor ro fe i of the j Junk shop in which the fire tiro originated A police sergeant ser ser- geant i interfered to stop the quarrel It is said that Albers struck the officer with an umbrella and was placed under arrest When being placed In the patrol wagon Albers Alber resisted and was Vias severely clubbed by the wagon patrol officers He was taken ta ta- ken to a hospital where his Injuries were pronounced serious
