S make it behave But there t is another way of looking g at it tt The liberalizing of the court WITHOUT the c adoption of the dangerous device oi ot packing n i it V f with new deal judges proves just as much that tha S 1 t Mr Roosevelt was wrong in 1937 that 1937 that it was not necessary for him to threaten the very basis II I of our democratic government by tampering with the judiciary V It is true that the supreme court has tended V 5 S V ff V V 5 ix t ij L L I i 1 1 at times to be a little too conservative to be beslow beslow beslow slow to adopt liberal trends of public opinion But in so doing it Is fulfilling exactly the function the founders of our government had hadin hadin V in mind when the court was established It was designed as as a a final check on n the often reckless reckless reckless reck reck- less vagaries of a momentarily-enthused momentarily popular popular popular pop pop- ular majority Over the long pull history proves the court courtS S WILL bow to public opinion if it holds steady on a new course And meanwhile it has has' often and will often save the nation ion from its own folly Didn't the court really do just that when it outlawed the then n new w deals deal's N R A
