We Da Dare Dar Not Relax Our Efforts THERE some measure of consola consola- 1 J. tIon to Utah as we contemplate the states state's heavy tra traffic fc toll toil this month In the knowledge that all rf ever vcr the nation there has been a marked marked increase increase In traffic deaths this summer However we should not permit that consolation consolation consola consola- i tion to result In a shrugging of shoulders and anda a relaxation of safety efforts The knowledge that other states are suffering from the same disease does not In the least minimize the burden burden burden bur bur- den upon Utah to bring all Its resources to bear in combating the plague and effecting a cure Fortunately the last few days have seen a considerable improvement In the states state's fatality record Since Saturday there has been but one fatal accident in m the state states With 22 dead so far farIn farin farin in August compared to to 23 in tn the entire month last year there Is hope now Utah will be able to maintain Its excellent record of red reducing cing fatalities fatal fatali ties each month in comparison with the 1938 toll worst in t the e states state's history But In view of ot the exceedingly bad record of ot 1938 it is not enough for us to simply make a small reduction In the toll for this year It must be drastically reduced educed else Utah will still stand as one of the worst states In hi Inthe the union I for traffic safety Proof of that is seen in the that Salt SaIt Lake City despite having reduced reduced re re- re fatalities more than half this year compared compared com com- pared to 1938 still ranks far down in the list of cities clUes In its population class for safety All of Utah has a big job to do in ing traffic accidents and deaths We have it itis Is true made some progress this year but it is only a start We still have a long way to togo go and Jo-and and the record of August Is a warning of how easily the little gain we have made thus far can be wiped out
