Show Old Age Benefits Unaffected If Goes to New Job Editors Editor's note Because of the Intense public Interest in the federal social security law and acid the Utah unemployment compensation law law- The Telegram will explain aU all details of the acts thoroughly in a series of articles j. j I Does change of jobs affect II I I federal old age benefits A worker does not lose any of his credits toward credits toward federal old age benefits benefits' benefits benefits' benefits benefits' bene bene- fits' fits if he changes his job from a covered employment to one which is not not- not covered covered by the benefits plan Nor will he lose any credits by shifting from one covered employment employment employment employ employ- ment to another He can hold a job wherever he be pleases and for as long longa a period as he desires As he goes from one job to another another another an an- other his credits toward his benefit continue to accumulate and nd will be bell credited to his account Old age b benefits are paid on one basis only That basis is the total amount of wages up to a year which the worker worker has has received from any anyone one employer during all the time he has worked in occupations covered by the act Computation of wages begins with the year 1937 1931 If the worker is employed employed employed em em- in five different years after January 1 1937 1931 If his total wages for this employment amount to more than 2000 and if he re retires retires retires re- re tires at the age of 65 he is eligible for monthly old age benefits regardless regardless regardless re re- re- re of where he worked or in how many places he worked II I I Benefits under the Utah unI unemployment unemployment un un- un- un I I employment c com o 0 m p pen e n act will begin January 1 1938 This gives employers a year two-year peri period d 1936 and 1937 1931 to build up their re re- re serve The first requirement for benefits is that the applicant must have been employed at least 16 weeks in the preceding 52 weeks and arid he must be unemployed at the time he ho makes his application for benefits The Tho second requirement is that he report to the nearest employment office as unemployed and ready for other work Then will come a waiting period of two weeks during which time the employment office will try to place him hint during this period Also the compensation division will study his work record to ascertain just how much he be should receive in the matter matter matter mat mat- ter of benefits In case the employment office gets him a job which is comparable to the one just left and which is one which he might be reasonably expected expected expected ex ex- ex- ex to hold the applicant for compensation must take th the job or lose his right to compensation at that time If It the employment office cannot find him a job and if he has not found anything for himself he will begin getting benefits at the rate of one-half one pay but no bene benefit tit payment payment payment pay pay- ment will be more than 15 a week The minimum is 7 1 a week or three- three quarters of the weekly wage whichever whichever whichever which which- ever is the smaller In case the minimum provision is not not clear consider a a. specific exam- exam Jit Jj l. l 1 t. pIe Mr A has been employed full ful time at 10 a week he is unemployed unemployed unemployed and entitled to benefits two weeks have gone by by- and no job has been forthcoming Half pay would woul be only 5 a week Therefore e he be would be entitled to the minimum o of 7 1 Three-fourths Three of his weekly wage is which is more than the 7 1 minimum Therefore he would get the 7 1 and the three three- fourths feature of the provision would Snot not apply in his case Suppose a man had been beez earning only omy 8 a week He would be entitled to the minimum benefits Three-fourths Three o of 8 is 6 Therefore his weekly benefit benefit benefit bene bene- fit would be 6 a week and not 7 1 Let us now go to the maximum A man nina works for 25 a week His benefits would be 1250 a week for fora a a. specified number of weeks Suppose Suppose Suppose Sup Sup- pose he were getting 30 a week His benefits would be 15 If his weekly wage had been 50 his benefits would still only be 15 a week If he had been an executive of a corporation corporation corporation corpora corpora- tion getting a year he be would woul be entitled to the maximum of 15 a week One thing to remember in regard to unemployment compensation benefits is that need has nothing whatever to do with the question The duration of benefits will be bedis be dis discussed cussed in the next article |
