Ethiopia Haunts League THE f League of Nations is not yet through with the Ethiopian C Question notwithstanding ing the fact that the immediate fate of Ethiopia seems to be fairly well determined In the light of the record it seems idle to hope that the J league can or will do anything that will Seriously se seriously seriously se- se disturb the military decision won fon by Italy The league nevertheless has just sought to avoid the necessity of making an immediate de decision ision on the sovereignty or the Jack ack of sovereignty of Ethiopia By asking th the world court to decide the point the league sought an easy way out of bf a rather difficult position Obviously the league could not hope to hold It Italy and recognize Ethiopia Any recognition of Ethiopia would be calculated to o drive Italy away ay and any consorting with Italy would distort distort dis dis- tort the record and embarrass earlier commit commit- ments The world court was not inclined to take tak the problem off the hands of the league Italy bolted the international conference on broadcasting broadcasting broadcasting broad broad- casting the suggestion that there was any doubt about the existing status of Ethiopia The question which now confronts the league is what to do about it If it refuses to seat Ethiopia Ethiopia Ethiopia Ethi Ethi- opia it recognizes Italy's conquest with which It was n never ver in sympathy On the other hand it cannot hope to hold Italy in the league if it takes any y an-y action which is contrary to the Italian ambition in E Ethiopia The impending decision may be the leagues league's last on Ethiopia With Japan pan and Germany already off the reserva- reserva I ion and chaos in Spain it can ill afford to o J have Italy Iy remain aloof i
