Show 1 First First Line Americans veterans of the world war from all W WITH parts of Utah assembled in Salt Lake for forthe forthe forthe the annual convention of ot the Utah department of the American Legion it is well to reflect upon the p past st of this noble contingent Most of us recall the stirring soul-stirring urge that sent them forth on a foreign mission If there was any doubt doubt in their minds as to there ever being a a sanctity in war the Cl cry A war to make th the world safe for democracy removed it These men who know the ugliness of war better than those who stayed at home now may look upon that urge with misgivings if not a degree of suspicion In any event event- it must appear appear appear ap ap- ap- ap pear that the struggle for the security of demo of-demo- demo democratic cratic cratie government was a will the the o It It If was a worthy ambition which did not reckon fully with the intrigues of the old world Democracy never was was' more seriously threatened threatened threat threat- ened cried than it is today There never was a time time- when the isms and schisms of designing machinations were machinations were more in evidence to to threaten and disturb the peace and happiness of self self- governing peoples The rul rule of force is abroad in the world In many places the liberties and freedom re dom of democratic institutions institutions' h have v been s submerged or obliterated by its relentless scheming scheming scheming schem schem- ing and determination It was pleasing to note therefore that the first speaker before the Utah Legi Legion n convention warned the Legionnaires of the d dangers that set t the path of ot the institutions for which e Hies fought and won When our first line Americans Amer Arner- Jc recognize the dang dangers rs which are imminent I we weare are not unprepared In this group we find the the arch arch en enemy y of communism and all the the oth other r would which ch- ch q ld seize ej l control o tr l and d direct t the the- y powers which are are inherent in the people under democratic government The love of the Legionnaires for democracy and their loyalty to their country and their people are firmly established It is written on the battlefields of Europe and upon monuments to the memories of brave comrades who paid the supreme price for their devotion Legionnaires are still carrying on for the guarantees and institutions of democratic government They constitute the first line lina of defense against the isms of the European social order It is stimulating stimulating stimulating lating and encouraging to hear Mr Mabey give audible expression to what is in the heart and mind of the rank and file of of the American L Legion gion |
