L Ro Roy Porte who came camerom from rom Canada as a b boy y with his widowed mother and went to work at t a tender age died in Salt Lake City Tuesday at the tho ago age of 60 Internationally internationally In- In known for his leadership leadership leader- leader ship hip In printing cost finding ex- ex the American tradition of f success hewn from adverse cir cir- Mr Porte who resided at 73 Fourth East street was president and nd m manager nager of the Porte Publishing Publishing Publish- Publish ing ng company For several years he le was secretary of the Utah Press association and at the recent meeting meeting meet- meet ing ng in Cedar City he was made an honorary life Ufo member He died at his lis home hom at 2 a a. a m. m Internationally Known Mr Porte was internationally known mown as an expert on printing cost ost having compiled the Porte price rice list from which has grown the he present Franklin printing cata- cata logue ogue His cost system has been translated into foreign languages and is used by printers' printers associations associations lons in Europe It was shortly after Mr Porte be became became became be- be came known as the boy editor of Hunter lunter N N. D D. where he established The Herald which he published from 1894 to 1897 1891 that he became an expert in cost finding He had gone to Fargo N N. D. D and opened a commercial printing shop and he became among the first to master the subject His knowledge of cost finding led ed to his appointment as secretary and cost expert of the commercial prInters prInters' organization in Cincinnati In n connection with that position he ho took ook to the l lecture platform and traveled widely as a speaker before printers' printers associations Issued First List Mr Porte came to Salt Lake City in July 1916 as secretary of the printers' printers association and had resided resided resided ed here since He issued his first price list in April 1917 1911 Widespread Widespread Widespread Wide Wide- spread demand for the price list listed led ed to founding of the Porte Publishing Publishing Pub- Pub lishing company which since 1924 hM has las been housed in its own plant at East Twenty-first Twenty South street Since illness forced his retirement retire retire- retirement ment from active direction of oC his business several months ago his associates h have ve carried on the en en- He was born May 8 1876 in Woodstock New Brunswick Canada Canada Canada Can Can- ada and when five years old he was taken aken by his widowed mother to Casselton N N.
