In Your Ow y taud 7 e FR is 4 YOU WILL VILL LII LIRE LIKE E T THESE IESE PEONIES If I were asked to select a dozen good peonies for for- forthe the garden of the aver average e amateur who hasn't too mu much h money to spend and so 50 cannot indulge in the newest varieties I think the tho following would be bemy bemy bemy my choice First at of all I should place Monsieur Mon Mon- sie r Jules Ella Elk a leally really sur superb erb peony which rates 92 out of ot a poss possible 10 and which is still ver very reasonable in price It is an early blooming flower of a particularly particular 1 good shade of oC pink with a broad circle of guard petals surrounding an incurved center of a lovely silver silvery pink tone The flowers are enormous in a well established root very profuse and tho the whole plant is tall and strong Yes Monsieur Jules Elie certainly comes at the head of my list Then I should choose Maxima mentioned yesterday in inthis inthis inthis this column as being among the early earb flowers which one may rely on for Decoration da day bloom This is an excellent white with a afew afew afew few streaks of red in some of the petals Baroness Schroeder I would have a later bloomer than either cither of the foregoing with the very palest imaginable pink as its color al although although al- al thou though h it is often called white It docs does fade to white It is a beautiful beautt- beautt ful thing and its buds open wellin well wellIn wellin In wa wa er Couronne dOr d'Or meaning Crown of Gold is a glistening white peony which is d distinguished b by a circle of oC golden stamens near the center hen hence e its name of ot course and by bya a strong odor which is unpleasant to some som people It reminds one of oC the scent of very much concentrated This variety blooms quite quae late and so will prolong the season in this dozen we are choosing choos choos- ing lag Superba also described yesterday while not receiving a high rating by the tho American Peony society would nevertheless be in iny my y dozen partly because of ot its early flowers but mainly because tho those e flowers are so handsome and so exquisitely fragrant It Isa Isa is isa a rich rose pink An old o peony which I would choose also is a good rose pink with shades of yellow near the base of ot the petals with wilh witha wilha a sweet perfume bat with unfortunately unfortunately unfortunately un un- un- un fortunately rather weak stems sterns It needs support but is well worth this extra tro trouble ble It blooms very late late late- often being the last in my garden to flower It is an inexpensive sort but 1 I like it immensely La Fee Fcc ce la ilia Fay and meaning the fairy really is like fairy in appearance It is a n delicate pale old rose rose with the cir circular ring of at outer petals being cream creamy white It blooms fairly faill earlLa early earl La Tulipe another French or origination also blooms quite early and is 15 flesh pink with a n few streaks of red in some same of ot the petals Marguerite Dessert and Marguerite Marguerite Mar Mar- Gerard are both Fr French peonies which are favorites with m me Dessert being a mid season bloomer with white flowers spotted with pale pink and golden stamens Gerard having perhaps larger flowers of a lovely tender flesh pink A peony of ot unusual form looking very very- much like a water lily IsMarl is isMarie Marl Marie Jaquin which is only semi- semi double with cupped shape the white petals cradling the yellow stamens in an entrancing fashion All who see this peony in flower fall victim t to its charms And now I have named 11 peonies and not a sIn single le reel red on oni amon among them This is partly b cause because there ther are not too many red peonies ant and very ery few low really good ones Besides I r dont don't care for lor forred red flowers myself However my choice choke In the reds I r. think would bo ho Mikado a peony entirety different from these men men- because it is one of ot the Japanese peonies with an outer ring of ot broad petals deep red inthis inthis in ir this instance and with the central centra bunch of petals being so narrow that we refer to them as filaments In this case they are arc a rich gold
