S Young imposed stern punishment on a young IJ man m fund found guilty of char charges cs of battery and automobile while intoxicated On J driving ving an each of the charges the prisoner was ordered to th 9 pay pay a fi fine e of a total of and remanded to jail to remain until the fine is p paid jd provided that the prisoner serve not more than six months For those who have 1 it Ld their lives e endangered by the reckless- reckless ss of drunken automobile drivers the order o of f the court will ivill seem seem more in keeping with l the offense than the customary penalties u- u Judge Young did not state that he was making an example of this man and so it would woud seem that the court has established a wholesome precedent from which to consider future ture vi violations lations of a similar nature No one will ill feel sorry for this man if future violations violations violations viola viola- are measured with the same yardstick and punished accordingly The fine in itself is s. s not too much for this offense It appears severe severe only when it is compared with other cases cases ses of record recerd in which the defendant I Escaped e with insufficient punishment Compared with some cases where there has been beena a loss of life and the contributing f factors were almost identical it would seem that this particular man is well and sufficiently punished However there must be a starting point and the public is more or less disgusted with the leniency which has been displayed in the past For this rea reason on it would seem that this precedent is desirable It undoubtedly will work to a good end if all ll of the judges hearing these gases ases exercise the same degree of sternness regardless regardless' of oft t the l identity of those who appear before t them themon themon em emon on these charges in the future |
