B Y U. U band from Provo and the first prize In the amateur contest to Prof Proto John Held Held's s Boy Scout band The pub jc was not informed fully In this par pal as the winning bands were entered d under temporary directors In the first place Profs Held should never ne have been appointed as Judges Inasmuch much a ath as th their thaIr ir bands wIre were participating In Inthe Inthe Inthe the contests and even though they had been honored by being appointed appoint appoInt- ed it would have shown their good faith to have declined to accept the appointment In my opinion acceptance might be considered a a. breach of ethics But the most deplorable feature of ot the whole affair was the stand taken by Professors Held Saner and ard Ford against too the suggestion that five tI judges act They protested protested pro pro- tested and actually refused aa fel tel low fudges the two additional men nen who had hai been officially appointed to act as Judges The fact that the tho Judges worn were 1 se seI se- se eI e- e I eluded would n naturally Impress the public in general that every precaution precaution pre pre- I caution had been taken to insure I fairness In Judging Nevertheless a CL musician above all others would I naturally have a keen sense of or he hear hear- r- r ing and should should be able to detect in 11 I hi his own band something he could not recognize in any other band Furthermore it must be remembered remembered remembered that each band played two selections one of at their own choice first and then the re regular gUlar contest number and that no two bands played the same preliminary selection sele- sele tion Granting G that th tha Judges my have followed certain prescribed rules in determining the outcome of or the contests It Is only r human that they should consider the bands they Mad bad personally trained as being I faultless and set them up as stand- stand |
