| Show x I The Socialist Party I IIi r Ii r of the proceedings at t the Socialist convention at l f C 1 REPORTS Chicago would indicate control of the party has passed into ls s i the ie hands of th those se w we generally class as radicals There is an ant 1 which marked Socialist gatherings gatherings gatherings gather gather- t absence b nce of a constructive e policy ings of f a few years ago t i Much of our modern d day y legislation which h we YIe term progressive progressive pro pro- gressi e was first put forward rd years ago ago by Socialists to be bec I scoffed c at when originally suggested but later t to be accepted as proper by the leading thinkers of the country and finally to be put into law by the major parties of th the country f The Socialist party in ill its heyday did much good for it spread t the propaganda that led to many needed reforms Such a board i as s the interstate commerce commission was first suggested by the thet I t Socialists And they urged the adoption of antitrust laws of i r government aid for reclamation tion work better wages shorter hours i ri r a tax on excess profits inheritance taxes and many other such matters i In the recent Chicago Chicag convention we find the Socialists indorsing indorsing l ing th the soviet government as now existent in Russia The soviet government may ultimately succeed and out of it may grow something great but its record to date is too black and its future too dubious to warrant indorsement by any real American t We find the Socialists also plotting to gain control of the labor unions the only result of which would be creation of a class classI I fight in this country The labor unions have struggled too long longto to gain their present high position to pay heed to the siren song w cf Df the Socialists and so there is no peril in the Socialist plan but itt it t indicates in what manner the Socialists have forgotten their previous previous pre- pre constructive policy Class distinction appears a dominant socialistic tendency of the thea j a present for the Chicago convention voted to deny membership i to all who rec receive ive returns from rents interest or profits Only the wage earner then who spends all the wages he receives or j hoards it so that he may not receive interest or profit upon it itI it- it I or the pauper or the loafer will be eligible to membership in the z Socialist party We believe the Chicago convention marks the swan song o of t the Socialist party Let us remember the organization for the good it did d in pointing the way to constructive legislation and forget it ignore it in the future for it has played false to its founders and to the principles it so long su supported ported |
