Show GRAZ lAND LADs OFFER ff OF f s rR VIt E Ef f All H Few Are Lucky but Majority Major Major- ity of Applications Are Turned Down in Washington Washington Washington Wash Wash- ington Records s Show I IA A the government A x very generously offered to citizens the right of acquiring homesteads of acres under the act of December 29 1916 the method Is not proving a success since hundreds of applications applications applications are being turned down This Is shown by the records of the local land office In charge of Registrar Gould Blakely In the federal building O Of Oc the many who have applied there have been few lucky ones and the rest are wondering what Is the matter with the the- Interior department of ot the government Hundreds of thees applications have been refused at Washington within the past month said Mr Bla Blakely ely and it may be ba of Interest to the public to know the the- reasons that the department Is giving for tor so doing VALUABLE FOR GRAZING The lands to be designated under this act are lands chiefly valuable for grazing or the raising of forage crops which contain no merchantable timber timber tim tim- ber her are not susceptible of Irrigation from any known source of water supply supply supply sup sup- ply and are of such character that acres are reasonably Iy required to support a family In practice it has been found that the applications are being turned down because the applicants have sought to take up acres adjoining Irrigated irrigated gated farms already owned A second reason is that they seek to acquire ground part of which can he called agricultural land and the third and main reason i Is that the department holds that the land Is of such nature that acres would not support a family There are many appeals from this last reason since the applicants say they are In better position than the department to know how much I land it will take to support them I I Further Inquiry from Ralph S.
