I What Dr Todd Has Done I Whoever improves the hygiene of the schoolroom is a benefactor of the race It has been demonstrated to tl the e satisfaction satisfaction sat sat- of sanitarians that fresh air is cool moist moving air In the schoolroom it seems a difficult problem mol lem to provide cool moist moving air with comfort to pupils and teacher A good many more or less complicated ventilating systems have been tried out at heavy cost with varying success success success suc suc- cess mostly failure The ventilators are temperamental too often they fail to vent Or the system is thrown out of gear by the of some incompetent Janitor or some I principal or perhaps some interfering visitor from the I board of education with no technical knowledge of the subject but plenty I of hereditary convictions to guide i W him There are three features of the open air which may be uncomfortable I at times It is too cold too windy J Jor or too stormy The whole purpose of any plan of room ventilation is to admit fresh air open air and yet exclude exclude ex ex- clude elude these uncomfortable features Now this ideal purpose may be satisfactorily satisfactorily satisfactorily sat sat- met in any room with outside outside outside out out- side exposure at a cost not to ex 2 per window Dr John B. B Todd of Syracuse N. N Y has done it I and we hereby nominate him a a race benefactor There are are- already hundreds hundreds hundreds hun hun- of school teachers and thousands thousands thousands thou thou- sands of parents eager to second the nomination Todds Todd's idea is so simple like many great discoveries that it makes makers us blush to think it never occurred to us in all an our search for adequate ate ventilation ven yen us us mechanical sanitarians It Itis Itis Itis is merely the substitution of cloth screens for the windows of the room Ordinary unbleached cotton cloth block rock for ordinary exposures and for exposed situations The screens ar are locked in place like external wire screens and the windows windows windows win win- dows kept raised They filter out dust prevent winds and drafts and snow and rain from blowing in admit admit admit ad ad- mit a perfect white light and yet permit permit permit per per- mit free ventilation The room is easily kept at a comfortable temperature tempera tempera- ture with less artificial heat than ordinarily required in unventilated rooms because bad air always makes an occupant feel depressed and inclined in in- inclined to chilliness At first teachers principals board parents everybody doubts the utility utility util util- ity of the cloth screen But oil oft testing testing test test- ing the Ute plan everybody likes it Pupils maintain better health have less frequent frequent frequent fre fre- quent colds and sore throat have havea a lower sick Tate rate rate from so called childrens diseases and take it from the tea teachers hers who have been fortunate fortunate fortunate for for- to teach leach in these ventilated rooms do much better mental work than they ever can do in the usual bad air of th the public schoolroom |
