J Egan who vanished while police were investigating the violent death of a wom woman n friend and benefactor turned today into a grim quest for his body Two excited telephone calls caUs one from Egan to police and another in which his wife Mrs Loraine E Egan an was told her husband had been taken tak en for a ride remained the only tangible clues to his fate The deepening enigma of his disappearance disappearance dis dis- appearance was linked at first with the death of Mrs Jesse Scott Johnston John John- Johnston ston Hughes 55 who made Egan h her r executor and bequeathed him most mos of her estate Her battered body jody was found Saturday morning beside a road in an exclusive residence resi resi- dence district Police believe she was slain and her body run over by an automobile to o make it appear she had been struck by a run hit-run driver Captain Charles Dullea r received a frantic call caU from Egan Tuesday night the last time his voice was heard These men have got me capt captain captin in Egan gan cried I r swear Im I'm innocent They think Im I'm phoning my wife wiCe Im I'm at the ferry building so come come come- Dullea heard a gasp as the receiver re reo clicked A squad of officers searched the ferry term terminal nal without finding inding Egan Then today his prostrated wife revealed revealed re- re she had received a mysterious call a few minutes after aUer Egan had talked to Dullea TAKES CALL LIGHTLY Weve just taken Frank for a ride Mrs Egan said a mans man's voice told her She could not believe belie anything serious had happened and failed to notify police A patrolman and an nn unidentified woman however claimed they saw Egan on a downtown street with two men about that same time The welter wel wel- ter er of contradictory clues bewildered investigators but almost all the evi evidence dence indicated Egan was under some mental strain for several days
