Show American Complacency Blasted . At Patriotic Program Feb. 12 AMERICANISM WEEK SPEAKERS WARN THAT COUNTRY STANDS IN DEADLY PERIL "Given enough time, United States has a 50-50 chance of winning this war," Otto Wiesley, member of the Utah state 'ndustrial commission and past commander of the Utah department de-partment of the American Legion, told an Americanism program pro-gram audience at Bingham Central school the evening of February 12. "That is, we have a chance IF we can find the old American Amer-ican lighting spirit. We can win IF we can throw aside our complacency, conceit and the false pride that nobody can beat the United States. "Our vaunted superiority doesn't mean much, particularly particular-ly if the other side has the dive bombers and monstrous tanks. We can win only if we get production going, can supply the materials needed and are given enough time. "Americans are still basking in the sunlight of the glory of former wars. The truth is we are less prepared today, pro-iortionately, pro-iortionately, than we were in World war I. tunes, a saxophone solo, was by Billy Earl Clough with Mrs. Robert Ro-bert Jimas piano accompanist. County Commissioner J. B. Mullins gave a plea for unity of purpose and defense efforts. Warning that people are showing show-ing an inadequate understanding of responsibility for civilian defense, de-fense, Mr. Mullins said that indifference in-difference and complacency may be even greater foes than Hitler and Hirohito. The public has not shown that they appreciate the need for speed. Giving up a few luxuries will not be enough to save the country. We must work longer and harder, put more and more money into defense savings stamps and bonds, he said. Singing of "God Bless America" Amer-ica" was led by Joel P. Jensen. The Rev. Meredith Smith gave the benediction. o Speaking of the peace to follow fol-low this war, Mr. Wiesley advised advis-ed Americans to see that we build the largest navy and army in the world to assure ourselves i hat there will never be another Treaty of Versailles. "You can't persecute a people and have them love you. We must write something into the next peace treaty that will eliminate elim-inate world hate and intolerance. I believe it is the destiny of America Am-erica to put into practice the principle of the Brotherhood of Man." Mayor Ed W. Johnson presided over the meeting, which was under un-der joint sponsorship of the Bingham Bing-ham district civilian defense council, the junior chamber of commerce and the Jordan school district.
