B Richards in a chapter on the Buchanan war of 1857 the author declines to place blame for br expediting this army t to Utah against the Latter-day Latter Saints nor does he place it with President President dent James Buchanan or his subordinates General Albert Sidney Johnston n and General W. W S. S Harney He says these men were influenced by the personal interviews and written reports of or United States Senators Sen Sen- A. A Douglas of Illinois and Thomas H. H Bent Benton n of ot Missouri and the statements made to ro Washington by federal ede l of officials cial sent to Utah He then points O it out th that t it was it-was was the intention of Buchanan and ills his advisors to keep the people in Utah in utter ignorance of the projected military advance against them while the soldiers were led t to believe that open rebellion existed in ill Utah The people as us a whole were said not to favor this military mili roUl tary expedition General W. W S.
