Show 1 Something of a Hardship I 4 THE PHE other day the news columns carried a i 11 1 1 a story of the passing of another handcart pioneer It was recorded t that at Mrs Lizzie Rogers Sharp died at the good old age of 83 after a full life of service When Then she was 8 years old she trekked across the plains with her family and friends pushing or following handcarts from the middie middle middle mid mid- dle die west to this fertile valley which became her home In these days of luxury and comfort it i is difficult to conceive the hardship and privation privation priva priva- tion lion involved in that journey of a thousand miles through desert and wilderness Over the same trail followed by h handcart pioneers three-quarters three of a century ago we travel de del deluxe deluxe l xe today spinning out the miles in speed and comfort Yet over the flight of time how easy itis it itis itis is to lament our condition regardless of the obvious fact we are infinitely better off than those st sturdy pioneers who ho fashioned the present present present pres pres- ent empire out of the wilderness Isn't it significant too that the hardships of these early pioneers did not seem to impair their usefulness or shorten the length of their lives A |
