Show I I Fear and Cowardice y I IS S S By DR FRANK CRANE There is a difference between fear and cow cowardice ai dice Pear Fear r is a natural instinctive shrinking from danger or the tin threat eat of danger Almost all strung high natures na na- na- na tures tunes feel teel it at times Cowardice Is the yielding to this fear so that we do some action or or give w way y to toan an unworthy impulseS impulse S The bravest t are not those who know kno no f rear fear S ar S SS not those who vho are so hardened or 01 stodgy th that t they have no su su such h Instinct but those who although they feel feeland feeland feeland and sense the presence of danger still go ahead and perform their dut duty That soldier is not the bravest who lost to all sense of fear rushes madly at the enemy and exposes ex ex- ex poses himself unnecessarily but he is the man who though trembling inwardly and shrinking in spirit yet has the courage to perform his duty We do not know that Sergeant Jasper or Arnold were senseless and impervious Impervious' to danger Wo We prefer to think that although they knew mew and realized the peril of oZ their deed they still sUIl had heroism enough to perform it Courage is not based upon the lack of fear tear bu but upon the conquest of ot fear by higher higher motives The bravest deeds probably have been een done by those who vho were terribly afraid yet jet et so terribly in earnest that they went ahead in spite of their fears Is a natural shrinking and a normal sense of f danger If It we constantly repress fear the feeling banks itself up in us until we go go to pieces But if we acknowledge that we are afraid yet jet still persist in doing what we should do in spite of ot fear the danger is not so great Weak and timid women have often orten performed sig sig- nally heroic acts under the influence of mother love or some other great emotion b because cause they would not give way to their fears tears It is a great thing to be unafraid but hut it is greater to be afraid yet jet to stand firmly by our higher con con- A soldier was once asked whether he had Shad any sense of ot fe fear r. r He replied Do you jou ou think I I Iam am urn a fool Of or course course I am afraid Many a man has gone forward and done some heroic act while all the time he was trembling inwardly with fear Copyright 1929 McClure Newspaper Syndicate |
