Show Horrible Accident. Charles W. Howard, of Evans-ton, Evans-ton, who has been employed as brakeman ou freight train So. 33, of ths Union Pacific, met with a fearful death ata point about twelve miles east of Ogden, yesterday morning, at or near Devil's Gate. Where the accident occurred, the road has numerous curves and a downward grade. As the accident was not seen by auyone, tho exact manner in which the unfortunate man was killed will probably never be known. It is supposed that he was thrown from the top of a box car by a lurch of the train in rounding round-ing a curve whilo In the act of applying ap-plying tbe brakes to the train, w hich was heavily loaded, and running run-ning at the rate of thirty miles an hour. Howard wai not missed from -his lost by the trainmen until Ogden was reached, where a search was at once instituted for him, and his mangled remain? were found dangling between the couplings ef two box cars. The llmhs of his body were hanging downward, and the flesh torn from oil the fingers of both hands, and the toes of one foot until the bones were exposed to view. Scarce any thing remained of tbe body but the trunk. One leg had been torn completely from its socket and was discovered by some railroad men, at a point .near Uintah. It was so mangled and bruised as to be difficult to tell what itreally was. The remains were taken charge of by UnJertakor Preshaw, of Ogden, Og-den, and sent to Evanston last T-euing, T-euing, at5:30, to Howard's wife who bad been apralsed of the tear" ful fatality. The deceased was 25 yean old and a member of the "Painter's Union, having until recently followed tbe trade of a painter. |
